Small Business Spotlight – The Market on the Square

Cookeville’s downtown is booming.

In the last few years, many new and unique businesses have launched on the West Side alone.  But, one retail location has been a steady presence in the heart of Cookeville for decades, The Market on the Square. During her 20 years at the helm of The Market, owner Marlene Massa has been a consistent, important presence in Cookeville’s retail scene.

The Lively & Caring Owner

Sitting down to talk with Marlene, her humbleness disguised the fact that she has successfully maintained one of the city’s most well-loved boutiques. She is just as dynamic as her store, to equally charming effect.

Marlene took over The Market On The Square in 2004 after her business partner realized that she didn’t have the same fire for pushing the venture as Marlene. Coming to the Market with previous retail experience gained via a career with Goody’s, Marlene quickly transitioned the store away from an individual booth rental (consignment) location.

During this move, as a vendor would leave and a booth become vacant, Marlene would replace their offerings with merchandise rather than source a new vendor. She curated items with the vision of being the ideal, unique gift-giving destination.

When asked what she really wanted Cookeville to know about The Market on the Square, Marlene’s response was simple, “We care.” She continued, “The Market on the Square thrives because of our wonderful community. We make sure to reinvest in our local non-profits and sports teams through monetary and product donations.” In fact, Marlene donates a large portion of her out of stock inventory to charitable auctions and those in need.

You don’t make it as a small business in this area without exceptional customer service, and a focus on this approach is apparent when walking into The Market. From region-specific items to a variety of sizes of women’s clothing, there is truly something for everyone in this amazing store. Bonus, they even gift wrap!

Leaving a Legacy

As Marlene looks to the future she is happy that her daughter, Mara, is a part of the business. She has always been involved but has become a strategic partner over the years. On this, Marlene stated, “It will be hers when I am gone. I hope she puts her spin on it and makes it her own.”

Whether you are looking to find the perfect gift for a special friend, a baby present that stands out at your next shower, or just something for that “treat yourself” day, go see Marlene and her team at Market on the Square! You are sure to leave with a smile on your face.
