Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity – Building Hope, One Home at a Time

For three decades, Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity (UCHFH) has played a transformative role in communities across Putnam and surrounding counties.

Established with the mission of bringing people together to build homes, communities, and hope, the organization is now on the cusp of a remarkable milestone: completing its 100th home.

This achievement comes as UCHFH marks its 30th anniversary, a testament to the enduring power of collaboration between staff, volunteers, sponsors, and community partners. Central to this progress is the West End development, a neighborhood project launched in 2016. Today, 18 of the initial 22 homes in this development are complete, and construction is set to begin on the next phase, which will add 10 additional homes—bringing the total in West End to 32.

For over 30 years, Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity has has made the dream of homeownership possible, one affordable home at a time,” says Director of Construction, Kevin Mears.

“As we enter the next phase of West End development, we’re closing in on a major milestone, our 100th home built. We can’t reach it alone. With continued support of our partners, sponsors, and dedicated volunteers, we can turn this vision into reality and open the door to homeownership for even more families in our community.”

UCHFH’s impact goes far beyond laying foundations and raising walls. The organization is equally focused on empowering families through financial education, volunteer engagement, and long-term stability programs. By offering affordable homeownership opportunities, they help individuals and families build strength and self-reliance.

“We believe in offering a hand up, not a handout. While some may think Habitat homes are given away, that’s a common misconception,” says Maren Bader, Director of Homeowner Services. Our partner families work hard to earn the opportunity to become homeowners-just like anyone applying for a traditional mortgage.

To qualify, homebuyers must meet specific income guidelines, demonstrate a need for safe and affordable housing, and show the ability to repay an affordable mortgage. But instead of making a traditional down payment, Habitat homeowners invest in their future through sweat equity-contributing hundreds of volunteer hours by helping to build their own home, supporting other Habitat projects, and serving in the community.

This partnership approach helps build stability and a sense of pride in ownership. Our homebuyers don’t just move into a house -they help build it from the ground up, becoming part of the community every step of the way.

However, with rising construction and land cost, the organization faces new challenges that demand greater community involvement. To become involved there are different ways to support Habitat’s mission. Opportunities include Dream Builder’s luncheon sponsorships, Restore sponsorship and support for events like the 5K races, and Cooking on the Square.

In addition, Build Day partnerships allow hands-on involvement, while donations and volunteering of time and talent continue to be essential in moving our mission forward. Together, these efforts help UCHFH reach new milestones and serve more families across the Upper Cumberland.

“As we celebrate 30 years of building hope in the Upper Cumberland, we’re deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our community,” says Executive Director, Jeremy Byrd. “Every donor, sponsor, volunteer, ReStore shopper, and event participant has played a vital role in transforming lives.” He adds, “Together, we’re making a lasting impact—one family, and one home at a time.”

As UCHFH marks this milestone of 30 years, its mission remains clear and compelling: to ensure every family has a safe, affordable home and to build communities where hope truly takes root.
